Understanding the Model
To ensure our vulnerable older Australians continue to receive high quality care during the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian Government engaged Aspen Aged Healthcare to prepare two contingency measures:
- Aged Care Emergency Retrieval Teams (ACERTs) ready to deploy immediately if the Aged Care Service (ACS) workforce is heavily impacted by COVID-19
- Aged Care Clinical and Essential Support Service (ACCESS) ready to deploy at short notice to fill individual workforce gaps in remote areas around Australia.
A key aspect of ACERTs and ACCESS is the 16-day deployment of an interim workforce which can be extended up to 60 days to help fill shortfalls resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak.
These contingency measures ensure that communities impacted by COVID-19 are supported and prepared to meet the needs of vulnerable older Australians who rely on ACSs.
Before applying for ACERTs or ACCESS an ACS must demonstrate that all other workforce channels have been exhausted, including:
- increasing hours of permanent, part-time and casual employees that have not been affected by COVID-19
- sourcing back-fill support through commercial nursing agencies.
